According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury and deaths worldwide.”

Statistically almost a third of mature adults (aged 65 and above) will have at least one fall per year and 30% of these result in moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures or head trauma. Injury from falls can negatively impact quality of life, independence and cause a fear of further falls.

We know that between 20–30% of all falls are preventable. Our therapists work with you and your family to help determine your falls risk factors and the recommended recovery strategies.

Risk factors of falls include:

  • Limited mobility
  • Impaired walking (gait)
  • Impaired balance
  • Visual impairment
  • Reduced muscle strength
  • Reduced reaction times
  • Medications
  • Fear of falling

How can we help?

  • Identify and remove potential risk or hazards
  • Equipment prescription
  • Falls prevention education

Pressure care injuries can occur from a range of factors, including:

  • Friction
  • Shearing
  • Poor nutrition
  • Some medications
  • Incontinence
  • Extended exposure to moisture
  • Altered level of consciousness
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Skin infections
  • Other pre-existing health conditions
  • Limited mobility
  • Advanced age

The more risk factors you have, the higher the probability of a pressure injury re-occurring with the progression and severity also increasing.
