Frequently Asked Questions

(FAQ)

According to Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA), Occupational Therapists use “a whole person perspective to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing through participation in the occupations of life.”

An ‘occupation’ can be any task or activity that we want, need or are expected to participate in to create a meaningful life and engage in our societies and cultures.

When your ability to engage in an occupation is affected by a condition, disability or stage of life, an Occupational Therapist can assist by working alongside you and/or your loved ones to determine goals and apply therapeutic practices using a holistic approach.

Some of the ways Occupational Therapists can help include therapy services, prescription of equipment, adaptations to the environment, education, training, recommendations for support services and many more.

At My Therapy Assist our Occupational Therapists can engage with you to work on your goals for as short or as long a period as you need.

At My Therapy Assist, we work with clients who have funding under a variety of schemes and programs (please refer to the ‘Funding’ tab in our ‘About Us’ section if you wish to seek more information).

If you would like to be referred to My Therapy Assist, click on ‘Get Started’ at the top of page. Alternatively, you can speak to one of our friendly staff first.

Yes! Occupational Therapy services can be more effective when we engage in the location/s that are relevant to your goals.

My Therapy Assist offers Occupational Therapy sessions in agreed upon locations, including at your home, work place/ day program and/or school, as well as our clinic.

Occupational Therapists do provide return to work services, however, it’s a common misconception that Occupational Therapists only support returning to work after an injury. This is just one of the many roles we can provide.

Your occupation does not just refer to your job, it is a task or activity that a person needs to do, wants to achieve or is expected to participate in and defines you as a person. Our goal is to support people who have difficulties or face challenges engaging in occupations because of a condition, disability or stage of life.

If you are unsure whether an Occupational Therapist may be able to support you, please get in touch with our friendly staff who would be happy to discuss this with you.

As Occupational Therapists, it is our responsibility to support overall quality of life and maintain independence as much as possible. Our focus at My Therapy Assist is to offer therapy that reflects the participant’s needs and wants and enable informed decisions making. This includes the right to choose or refuse recommendations and/or services.

The information we gather as part of our therapy remains confidential as per The Privacy Act (1988). My Therapy Assist uses this to develop customised therapy programs and recommend equipment and aids that reflect client goals to facilitate participation, independence and quality of life.

My Therapy Assist recognises that each person’s wants, needs and expectations are unique. Occupational Therapy is highly suited to work with complex disabilities because of a variety of skills that can be tailored to each individual.

We design our therapies to ensure they reflect client objectives and are set at the client’s own pace. We begin by completing a holistic assessment to determine strengths, challenges and existing supports and identify the most important objectives to each person.

Our therapists support and assist clients to set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and suitably timed (SMART goals). At times we can work on multiple goals simultaneously or focus on one particular goal depending on the individual’s needs. If appropriate we can also engage other therapies: using a multidisciplinary team.

My Therapy Assist will always openly communicate therapy plans with clients and/or their families so you are aware and informed at all times.

Our team at My Therapy Assist works hand in hand with parents during therapy sessions to provide a complete therapy experience for our clients. During our sessions, we empower clients and their significant others by walking them through how to apply learnt techniques and strategies or use equipment. This is then adapted and revised over time at the pace of each individual.

Our mobile therapists offer the option of engaging in therapy services in a variety of settings. This is tailored to each client’s daily life and the places that are relevant to them, including their home, work, school and/or day programs etc.
